Word-choice conundrum

“Bring” versus “take”: In most situations, it's clear which to use, but every now and then the context makes it not so clear-cut. Today I encountered one of those situations, so out came the usage guides. The one I rely on most is Garner's Modern English Usage. After reading (once again) this entry and the advice from Chicago Manual of Style, Gregg Reference Manual, and Merriam-Webster (which takes the prize for the most entertaining explanation—look it up and see for yourself; you won’t regret it!), I considered the audience of the piece I was editing and made the call.

That took at least 15 minutes. For one sentence. Which explains why thorough and accurate copyediting takes time, often significantly more time than someone who’s not a copy editor might think. The decisions involved are not always black-and-white, and there are many factors to take into account.
